It’s now been a full year since we introduced Valeda Light Therapy at Oracle Opticians—and the results have been nothing short of encouraging. While this revolutionary treatment is not a cure, it has made a meaningful difference to the lives of many of our patients living with Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration (dry AMD).

What is Macular Degeneration?
Macular Degeneration, specifically Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), is a progressive eye disease that affects the macula—the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision. As the disease advances, it can make everyday tasks like reading, recognising faces, or driving increasingly difficult.
AMD is one of the leading causes of vision loss in people over 50. According to the Macular Society, more than 600,000 people in the UK are affected by AMD, and that number is expected to rise significantly in the coming years due to our ageing population.
There are two main types of AMD:
Dry AMD (the most common form) accounts for around 85–90% of cases and progresses slowly.
Wet AMD is more aggressive but can be treated with injections if caught early.
An Ageing Population and a Growing Concern
As life expectancy increases, so does the number of people affected by age-related eye conditions. So what is Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration? In essence, dry AMD occurs when the cells in the macula become damaged by age-related wear and tear. This results in gradual vision loss that, while not painful, can be deeply distressing.
The sad reality is that traditional support for people with dry AMD has often been lacking—leaving patients feeling helpless. But we believe that should never be the case.
Valeda Light Therapy: A New Chapter in Dry AMD Support
At Oracle Opticians, we don’t just treat the condition—we support the person. Valeda Light Delivery System (LDS) is the world’s first approved photobiomodulation device for dry AMD. It uses low-level light at specific wavelengths to stimulate cellular activity, reduce inflammation, and improve retinal energy metabolism.
Valeda LDS Is Not a Dry AMD Cure. Its a Solution to Slow Progression.
While Valeda is not a dry AMD cure, it offers hope. It can slow progression, improve function in some cases, and most importantly, empower patients with the knowledge and tools they need to take control of their eye health.
Our service goes far beyond delivering light therapy—we provide:
Full clinical assessments
Lifestyle and nutritional advice based on the latest research
Coordination with your GP to ensure holistic care
Emotional support and a friendly, compassionate environment

“After finding out I have the start of Dry Macular Degeneration in March, I attended a baseline assessment with Jag at Oracle, at which I received lots of very useful information. I had a full and comprehensive eye test and scans, using the latest high-tech equipment. I also had the opportunity to ask all my previously unanswered questions. When I left, I honestly felt 100% more positive about the future.I decided to proceed with the Valeda Light Treatment, which I have now completed.I am so very grateful to Jag and his team for their warm welcome, genuine care and kindness.
